Germany has 16 federal states. However, some do say the island of Mallorca is Germany’s 17th state. In fact, they are just joking, but the island is definitely a very popular German destination. Lots of Germans even settle down there and open different types of businesses.
Many hotels, restaurants, bars and discos survive because of tourism, Germans being a huge part of it. Therefore most businesses manage to cater to their customers’ taste by investing in language training for staff and creating the “proper” atmosphere with German music, food and beer.
Many German tourists (not all of them, of course) go to a specific area called S’Arenal in order to party. And they do party! I guess that’s the place where they feel free to do all they don’t allow themselves to do in normal circumstances where they could ruin their reputation, in their hometowns, for instance, where the neighbors could recognize them. They drink alcoholic drinks from buckets, lots of them with extremely long straws sucking from the same bucket. It looks disgusting for the ones who are sober, of course. 😉 They dance on the tables, they lie on the beach or streets totally unconscious. Looks like the world is about to end and that’s their last opportunity to party. Anyway, if that’s what makes them happy…
But of course there are other types of tourists who just want to enjoy the nice weather, the wonderful beaches and the landscape. And the island has lots to offer to all kinds of people. I love Palma, the capital city, with its imposing cathedral and old buildings. Alcúdia, whose old town is surrounded by a medieval wall, is another wonderful place to visit. Serra de Tramuntana is also great with its cliffs contrasting with the blue Mediterranean. It’s such a beautiful island, I guess it’s easy to feel at home there, no matter where you’re from!
